Gender differences in economics PhD field specializations with correlated choices

The focus of our paper is the process underlying gender differences in choice field specialization among students doctoral programs economics. We model beginning economists within a multivariate logit framework that accommodates single- and dual-primary specializations incorporates correlations choices. Conditioning on personal, economic, institutional variables reveals women graduate are less likely to specialize Labor/Health, Macro/Finance, Industrial Organization, Public Economics, Development/Growth/International more Agricultural/Resource/Environmental Economics.
