Genome-wide identification of Fagus sylvatica aquaporins and their comparative spring and summer expression profiles

Abstract Key message A total of 45 aquaporins was identified in Fagus sylvatica , 35 which were differentially expressed spring and summer the leaves, phloem xylem 11-year-old trees. European beech ( ) has been widely studied terms its water relations local adaptation. However, to date, underlying basis conferring adaptation differences availability are unknown. Therefore, we examined expression trees four different provenances representing southern northern range margins, as well core populations, grown a common garden. We sampled their xylem, leaf tissue, when leaves had fully expanded, late summer. aquaporin isoforms genome, detected across all tissues. In our phylogenetic analysis, clustered into five subfamilies found other woody species. Members plasma membrane intrinsic protein subfamily generally displayed highest levels expression, followed by tonoplast proteins. Isoforms remaining subfamilies, Noduline-26-like proteins, small basic proteins uncharacterised at very low moderate levels. The most stable or declined from Leaves profile that vascular tissues, whereas both express same Fs MIPs. Tissue-specific similar amongst provenances, indicating there is no inherent difference capability these regulate activity. general decrease MIP toward end growing period indicates involved tree growth.
