Geographical approaches to religion in the past

Abstract This review assesses (anglophone) cross‐disciplinary research that has used geographical methodologies to study religion in the past. It identifies three prominent themes within existing literature: spatalisation of religion, intersections between and built environments, relationships physical landscapes. argues application approaches past made important contributions feminist postcolonial attempts de‐centre religious leaders social elites. However, it also demonstrates literature been fundamentally informed by inherently modern western definitions religion. Primarily, how prioritised institutionalised Abrahamic religions, emphasised analysis sacred‐secular dichotomies, assumed affiliation involves personal belief spiritual encounter.
