Geolectric field measurement, modelling and validation during geomagnetic storms in the UK

چکیده

Significant geoelectric fields are produced by the interaction of rapidly varying magnetic with conductive Earth, particularly during intense geomagnetic activity. Though usually harmless, large or sustained can damage grounded infrastructure such as high-voltage transformers and pipelines via geomagnetically induced currents (GICs). A key aspect understanding effects space weather on is through spatial temporal variation field. Globally, there few long-term monitoring sites field, so in 2012 measurements horizontal surface field were started at Lerwick, Eskdalemuir Hartland observatories UK. Between 2020, maximum value observed was around 1 V/km 0.5 0.1 March 2015 storm. These observations also allow comparisons models to be made. We use compute magnetotelluric impedance transfer functions each observatory for periods from 20 30,000 s. then used predict selected storm times that match recorded very well (correlation 0.9). values a thin-sheet model Britain, accounting diverse geological bathymetric island setting. find captures peak phase band-passed reasonably well, linear correlation 0.4 general. From these two modelling approaches, we generate historic storms (March 1989 October 2003) estimates past up 1.75 Eskdalemuir. However, evidence high voltage transformer GIC suggests likely represent an underestimate true value.

Ionospheric redistribution during geomagnetic storms

[1]The abundance of plasma in the daytime ionosphere is often seen to grow greatly during geomagnetic storms. Recent reports suggest that the magnitude of the plasma density enhancement depends on the UT of storm onset. This possibility is investigated over a 7year period using global maps of ionospheric total electron content (TEC) produced at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The analysis confir...

Acceleration and loss of relativistic electrons during small geomagnetic storms

Past studies of radiation belt relativistic electrons have favored active storm time periods, while the effects of small geomagnetic storms (Dst > -50 nT) have not been statistically characterized. In this timely study, given the current weak solar cycle, we identify 342 small storms from 1989 through 2000 and quantify the corresponding change in relativistic electron flux at geosynchronous orb...

simulation and experimental studies for prediction mineral scale formation in oil field during mixing of injection and formation water

abstract: mineral scaling in oil and gas production equipment is one of the most important problem that occurs while water injection and it has been recognized to be a major operational problem. the incompatibility between injected and formation waters may result in inorganic scale precipitation in the equipment and reservoir and then reduction of oil production rate and water injection rate. ...

Database of ion temperature maps during geomagnetic storms

Ion temperatures as a function of the x and y axes in the geocentric solar magnetospheric (GSM) coordinate system and time are available for 76 geomagnetic storms that occurred during the period July 2008 to December 2013 on CDAWeb. The method for mapping energetic neutral atom data from the Two Wide-angle Imaging Spectrometers (TWINS) mission to the GSM equatorial plane and subsequent ion temp...

Geomagnetic Storms Can Trigger Stroke

Although research linking cardiovascular disorders to geomagnetic activity during the past 40 years is accumulating, robust evidence for the effect of geomagnetic activity (the earth’s magnetic field) on stroke occurrence is lacking and remains a matter of controversy. This is because most studies to date are complicated by significant methodological limitations: high likelihood of stroke miscl...
