Geometrical process design during continuous generating grinding of cutting tools

Abstract Modern cutting tools like end mills, drilling tools, and reamers underlie high requirements regarding geometrical accuracy, edge quality, production costs. However, the potential for process optimization is limited due to kinematics during grinding. Consequently, a novel tool grinding manufacture of has been developed recently at Institute Production Engineering Machine Tools (IFW). This continuous generating allows simultaneous all flutes circumferential flank faces rotational symmetrical tools. The present paper focuses on design develops method determine necessary basic rack parameters in order create desired geometry by can define with an accuracy up 5 µm 0.2° within simulation five iteration steps not only quantitative but qualitative modification flute as well. Subsequently performed tests showed that presented worms enables successful implementation these processes.
