Gestures and Adaptive Niches

چکیده
This proposal presents an evolutionary analysis of three types co-speech gestures: symbolic emblems, indexical pointing gestures and iconic representational gesticulations. Synthesizing insights from a range published sources in gestural studies, general linguistics sign language linguistics, primate studies analyses biological evolution, these are analyzed as evolved traits adapted to particular niches or roles within broader systems. Niche boundaries comprised element’s distinct properties functions, routes learning transmission degrees innateness evolvability populations. Rather than elements distributed along flat productive-analytical continuum stages diachronic pathways, terms adaptive peaks valleys with landscape representing the system comprising human gesture language. The same processes used analyze speaking populations linguistic derived signing approach offers new ways approaching proposed universals long-standing issues such listability languages, while offering formal gestures.

Adaptive Segmentation for Air Gestures Identification
Having a user-friendly Human-CAD interaction with high speed and accuracy plays a key role in development of future intelligent modeling environments. A major part of this puzzle is sketch identification using either 2D gestures -which is commonly recorded from mouse, light pen and touchpador air gestures captured from some newly emerged devices such as Leap Motion and Soft-Kinect. To this end,...
متن کاملDynamically Adaptive Tracking of Gestures and Facial Expressions
We present a dynamic data-driven framework for tracking gestures and facial expressions from monocular sequences. Our system uses two cameras, one for the face and one for the body view for processing in different scales. Specifically, and for the gesture tracking module, we track the hands and the head, obtaining as output the blobs (ellipses) of the ROIs, and we detect the shoulder positions ...
متن کاملChild development of adaptive phonetic gestures observed in vowel devoicing
The developmental properties of vowel devoicing were investigated for 72 children of 4 and 5 years of age, and 37 adults in two dialects of Japanese. One was the Osaka dialect, with a low devoicing rate, and the other the Tokyo dialect, with a high devoicing rate. In the Tokyo dialect, the devoicing rate of children significantly increased and reached an adult-like level by the age of 5 years, ...
متن کاملDomain-Adaptive Discriminative One-Shot Learning of Gestures
The objective of this paper is to recognize gestures in videos – both localizing the gesture and classifying it into one of multiple classes. We show that the performance of a gesture classifier learnt from a single (strongly supervised) training example can be boosted significantly using a ‘reservoir’ of weakly supervised gesture examples (and that the performance exceeds learning from the one...
متن کاملNiches: Similarities and Differences
Organisms are machines designed by their evolution to play a certain role. This role, together with the environment within which it is played, is called the organism's niche 1. For example, most cats — tigers, leopards, mountain lions — play the role of solitary hunters; wolves and wild dogs are social hunters; antelope are social grazers; and so on. The niche defines the patterns of adaptive b...
