Soft and Hard Qcd *

I review various theoretical questions that arise from data from HERA and the Tevatron, and which are relevant for the LHC. They range from soft physics, such as the total cross section, to hard physics, such as Higgs production. In particular, I argue that the proton's gluon density is somewhat larger at small x than is currently accepted.

5 Soft and Hard Jets in QCD

Multiplicity of sets of soft jets with energies ranging in some interval is determined. The possible role of collective effects is discussed. The phenomenon of jet emission is well known in QCD and firmly established in experiment. The two-jet events in e + e −-annihilation provide us with unique possibility to measure jets with fixed energy equal to that of colliding particles. In all other ca...

Soft and hard QCD dynamics in hadroproduction of charmonium

Both hard and soft QCD dynamics are important in charmonium production, as presented here through a next-to-leading order QCD matrix element calculation combined with the colour evaporation model. Observed xF and p⊥ distributions of J/ψ in hadroproduction at fixed target and pp̄ collider energies are reproduced. Quite similar results can also be obtained in a more phenomenologically useful Monte...

ATLAS measurements of minimum bias and soft QCD

The first measurements of charged particle production in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energy √ s = 900 GeV and 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC are presented. Minimum bias distributions are measured for events with at least one charged particle in the kinematic range |η | < 2.5 and pT > 500 MeV and compared with the predictions from various Monte Carlo models. Act...

Hard Probes of the ATLAS Heavy Ion Physics Program

The success of the RHIC program has been based largely on its ability to deduce the properties of the dense medium using various energetic “hard probes”, including light quark jets (u,d,s), gluon jets, heavy quark jets (c,b) and photons (γ), which interact with different strength in the medium. The interaction of the colored probes, i.e. quarks and gluons, not only leads to the suppression of t...
