چکیده

Abstract. Emissions are a central component of atmospheric chemistry models. The Harmonized Component (HEMCO) is software for computing emissions from user-selected ensemble emission inventories and algorithms. It allows users to re-grid, combine, overwrite, subset, scale different through configuration file with no change the model source code. also maps species appropriate units. HEMCO can operate in offline stand-alone mode, but more importantly it provides an online facility models compute at runtime. complies Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF) portability across We present new version here, 3.0, that features improved three-layer architecture facilitate implementation into any capability calculating resolution including multiscale unstructured grids. 3.0 includes (1) Data Input Layer reads accesses library other environmental data, (2) Core computes on grid, (3) Model Interface re-grids (if needed) serves data dependent state (such as dust or vegetation). common all models, while adaptable environment. HEMCO v1.0: a versatile, ESMF-compliant component for calculating emissions in atmospheric models

We describe the Harvard–NASA Emission Component version 1.0 (HEMCO), a stand-alone software component for computing emissions in global atmospheric models. HEMCO determines emissions from different sources, regions, and species on a user-defined grid and can combine, overlay, and update a set of data inventories and scale factors, as specified by the user through the HEMCO configuration file. Top-down estimate of dust emissions through integration of MODIS and MISR aerosol retrievals with the GEOS-Chem adjoint model

[1] Predicting the influences of dust on atmospheric composition, climate, and human health requires accurate knowledge of dust emissions, but large uncertainties persist in quantifying mineral sources. This study presents a new method for combined use of satellite-measured radiances and inverse modeling to spatially constrain the amount and location of dust emissions. The technique is illustra...

Constraints on ship NOx emissions in Europe using GEOS-Chem and OMI satellite NO2 observations

We present a top-down ship NOx emission inventory for the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the Bay of Biscay and the Mediterranean Sea based on satellite-observed tropospheric NO2 columns of the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) for 2005–2006. We improved the representation of ship emissions in the GEOS-Chem chemistry transport model, and compared simulated NO2 columns to consistent satellite observa...
