Harvest Residue Decomposition from Eucalyptus sp. Plantations in Temperate Climate: Indicators and Contribution to Nutrient Cycling

چکیده
The sustainable management of forest plantations by keeping the harvest residues on site improves soil’s chemical, physical and biological properties while constituting an important nutrient reserve. Our objectives were: (a) to identify quantify characteristics Eucalyptus dunnii, grandis globulus that affect decomposition rates residues, as well indicators can explain process (b) potential recycling nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) magnesium (Mg) soil from residue quantitative qualitative differences between species. We analyzed information five commercial Uruguay. At harvest, biomass leaves, thin thick branches, bark their respective N, P, K, Ca Mg contents were quantified. each site, bags with samples different left decompose periodically collected throughout 24 months. dunnii presented largest amounts all parts. depended chemical constitution, part size leaves showed shortest half-life (0.94 years), same species longest (5.62 years). Total carbon (total soluble) contents, which be easily determined, emerged good predictors for estimation. release patterns nutrients more dynamics in plant parts than itself. results highlight importance ensure sustainability productive system medium long term.

Microbial decomposition of post-harvest sugarcane residue.
A laboratory in situ composting study was conducted as a possible alternative method for the current practice of open air burning of post-harvest sugarcane residue by sugarcane farmers. In situ composting of the sugarcane residue by the indigenous bacteria and fungi was accelerated using molasses as an initial substrate. A one-time application of molasses boosted the soil microbial population. ...
متن کاملUnderstory Colonization of Eucalyptus Plantations in Hawaii in Relation to Light and Nutrient Levels
Exotic tree plantations may serve as catalysts for native forest regeneration in agriculturally degraded landscapes. In 2001, we evaluated plant species regeneration in the understory of a 7-year-old experimental Eucalyptus saligna forest in Hawaii approximately 1 year after the cessation of 5 years of herbicide. These forests were organized in a 2 3 2–factorial design of planting density (1 3 ...

Full retention of sugarcane (interspecifi c hybrids of Saccharum spp.) postharvest residue may reduce ratoon crop yields. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different residue removal timings and methods on sugarcane yield. A two-factor (timing and method) experiment was conducted on both clay and silt loam soils in southeastern Louisiana. Removal timings consisted of th...
