Effect of light Polarization on the absorption index of alkali metal vapor in optical pumping phenomenon

Recently atomic magnetometers are one of the best tools in biomagnetic measurement such as magnetic field of brain and heart. In this paper, the technology of optically pumped atomic magnetometer based on circularly polarized light absorption pumping is described. We have been investigated a new method for measuring polarization effect in an alkali vapor based on polarized light transmission. I...

Effects of spin-exchange collisions in a high-density alkali-metal vapor in low magnetic fields

Spin-exchange collisions often play a dominant role in the broadening of Zeeman resonances in an alkalimetal vapor. Contrary to intuitive expectations, at high alkali-metal densities this broadening can be completely eliminated by operating in a low magnetic field, allowing construction of ultrasensitive atomic magnetometers. We describe a detailed study of the Zeeman resonance frequencies and ...

Stroboscopic backaction evasion in a dense alkali-metal vapor.

We explore experimentally quantum nondemolition measurements of atomic spin in a hot potassium vapor in the presence of spin-exchange relaxation. We demonstrate a new technique for backaction evasion by stroboscopic modulation of the probe light. With this technique we study spin noise as a function of polarization for atoms with spin greater than 1/2 and obtain good agreement with a simple the...

All-optical switching in rubidium vapor.

We report on an all-optical switch that operates at low light levels. It consists of laser beams counterpropagating through a warm rubidium vapor that induce an off-axis optical pattern. A switching laser beam causes this pattern to rotate even when the power in the switching beam is much lower than the power in the pattern. The observed switching energy density is very low, suggesting that the...

Hybrid optical pumping of optically dense alkali-metal vapor without quenching gas.

Optical pumping of an optically thick atomic vapor typically requires a quenching buffer gas, such as N2, to prevent radiation trapping of unpolarized photons which would depolarize the atoms. We show that optical pumping of a trace contamination of Rb present in K metal results in a 4.5 times higher polarization of K than direct optical pumping of K in the absence of N2. Such spin-exchange pol...
