Hepato and Nephro-protective Potentials of Gongronema latifolium in Streptozotocin Induced diabetic Rat Model

Gongronema latifolium (GL) is reported to have hepato-protective and nephron-protective ability. Diabetes associated with liver kidney damage. This work was designed evaluate the effect of ethanolic leaf extract on functions in Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. 40 Wistar rats both sexes (150g-200g) were divided into five (n=8). Group 1- normal control (received saline placebo orally). 2 received 200mg/kg GL orally. 3 group administered 65mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ) intraperitoneally for two consecutive days an interval one day between. 4 (diabetic + group) had STZ (65mg/kg i.p.) oral administration GL. 5 treated insulin subcutaneously. Blood samples collected via cardiac puncture assess Liver enzymes activity, Serum electrolytes biomarkers, Urea Creatinine. The Result shows a significant (P<0.05) increase glucose level compared control. Intervention significantly reduced towards normal. activity (p<0.05) increased but (p<0.01) decreased following treatment insulin. Sodium, potassium, chloride, urea creatinine decrease bicarbonate. reversed these changes Results presented that just like possess hypoglycemic, nephro potential. Thus, condition, may exert ameliorative target organs.
