High Intra‐Seasonal Variability in Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Temperate Constructed Ponds

Abstract Inland waters play a major role in global greenhouse gas (GHG) budgets. The smallest of these systems (i.e., ponds) have particularly large—but poorly constrained—emissions footprint at the scale. Much this uncertainty is due to poor understanding temporal variability emissions. Here, we conducted high‐resolution sampling quantify GHG exchange between four temperate constructed ponds and atmosphere on an annual basis. We show are net source GHGs (564.4 g CO 2 ‐eq m −2 yr −1 ), driven by highly temporally variable diffusive methane (CH 4 ) Diffusive CH release was twice as high during periods when had stratified water column than it mixed. Ebullitive also higher stratification. Building favor mixed conditions thus presents opportunity minimize future pond construction.
