High temperature superconducting cables and their performance against short circuit faults: current development, challenges, solutions, and future trends

Abstract Along with advancements in superconducting technology, especially high-temperature superconductors (HTSs), the use of these materials power system applications is gaining outstanding attention. Due to lower weight, capability carrying higher currents, and loss characteristic HTS cables, compared conventional counterparts, they are among most focused large-scale systems transportation units. In near future, cables will be installed as key elements not only but also cryo-electrified units, that take advantage both cryogenics technology simultaneously, e.g., hydrogen-powered aircraft. Given sensitivity reliable continuous performance any failures, caused by faults, could catastrophic, if designed appropriately. Thus, fault analysis crucial for ensuring their safety, reliability, stability, characterising behaviour under currents at design stage. Many investigations have been conducted on characterisation last few years. This paper aims provide a topical review all studies, discuss current challenges after developments presented, then we future trends regarding performance.
