Host Species and Captivity Distinguish the Microbiome Compositions of a Diverse Zoo-Resident Non-Human Primate Population

چکیده

Vast numbers of microorganisms inhabit the mammalian gastrointestinal tract in a complex community referred to as gut microbiome. An individual’s microbiome may be impacted by genetics, diet, and various environmental factors, has been associated with many health states diseases, though specific explanations are lacking. While these communities well-studied human populations, non-human primates (NHPs), particular zoo-resident or captive NHPs, offer distinct advantages increasing our understanding factors that influence composition. Here, we characterize composition phylogenetically diverse cohort NHPs residing same urban zoo. We show despite overlapping controlled contexts, microbiomes still distinguished between NHP host species. However, when comparing zoo wild captivity status strongly distinguishes from their counterparts, regardless phylogeny. Microbial orders unique include taxa commonly present microbiomes. Together, results demonstrate differences species diversity, suggesting species-specific approaches should considered investigating factors’ on

Captivity humanizes the primate microbiome.

The primate gastrointestinal tract is home to trillions of bacteria, whose composition is associated with numerous metabolic, autoimmune, and infectious human diseases. Although there is increasing evidence that modern and Westernized societies are associated with dramatic loss of natural human gut microbiome diversity, the causes and consequences of such loss are challenging to study. Here we ...

Correlative Association between Resident Plasmids and the Host Chromosome in a Diverse Agrobacterium Soil Population.

Soil samples collected from a fallow field which had not been cultivated for 5 years harbored a population of Agrobacterium spp. estimated at 3 x 10 CFU/g. Characterization of 72 strains selected from four different isolation media showed the presence of biovar 1 (56%) and bv. 2 (44%) strains. Pathogenicity assays on five different test plants revealed a high proportion (33%) of tumorigenic str...

African Non-Human Primates Host Diverse Enteroviruses

Enteroviruses (EVs) belong to the family Picornaviridae and are responsible for mild to severe diseases in mammals including humans and non-human primates (NHP). Simian EVs were first discovered in the 1950s in the Old World Monkeys and recently in wild chimpanzee, gorilla and mandrill in Cameroon. In the present study, we screened by PCR EVs in 600 fecal samples of wild apes and monkeys that w...
