Housing microfinance and housing financialisation in a global perspective

The application of microfinance to the provision, improvement or adaptation housing—‘housing microfinance’—is an increasingly significant area practice and research interest. Housing has proliferated, predominantly but not exclusively in global South. Its proliferation must be understood context financialisation concurrently growing importance financial self-help private real estate investment. Promoter perspectives emphasise affordability solutions for housing, their appropriateness incremental housing strategies, potentially interesting new business models. Critical high costs continual need subsidies, risks faced by borrowers discipline demanded from them. To advance debate, we present analytical typology which maps different approaches terms how they connect finance with whether are credit-led savings-led, market state dominates, individualistic community-oriented, formal informal are. five articles this special issue, presenting material Kenya, Mexico, U.S.A, Thailand Argentina, collectively six avenues on microfinance: (1) its immediate social impacts; (2) wider impacts affordability, markets policies; (3) implications construction retailing markets; (4) consequences urban development societies, (5) work required participants; (6) significance ongoing experimentation microfinance.
