How inertial lift affects the dynamics of a microswimmer in Poiseuille flow

چکیده

Abstract The transport of motile microorganisms is strongly influenced by fluid flows that are ubiquitous in biological environments. Here we demonstrate the impact inertia. We analyze dynamics a microswimmer pressure-driven Poiseuille flow, where inertia small but non-negligible. Using perturbation theory and reciprocal theorem, show addition to classical inertial lift passive particles, active nature generates ‘swimming lift’, which evaluate for neutral pusher/puller-type swimmers. Accounting engenders rich spectrum complex including bistable states, tumbling coexists with stable centerline swimming or swinging. sensitive swimmer’s hydrodynamic signature goes well beyond findings at vanishing Our work will have non-trivial implications on dispersion suspensions microchannels.

Nonlinear dynamics of a microswimmer in Poiseuille flow.

We study the three-dimensional dynamics of a spherical microswimmer in cylindrical Poiseuille flow which can be mapped onto a Hamiltonian system. Swinging and tumbling trajectories are identified. In 2D they are equivalent to oscillating and circling solutions of a mathematical pendulum. Hydrodynamic interactions between the swimmer and confining channel walls lead to dissipative dynamics and r...

Non-Equilibruim Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Poiseuille Flow in a Nanochannel

The numerical simulation of a Poiseuille flow in a narrow channel using the molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) is performed. Poiseuille flow of liquid Argon in a nanochannel is simulated by embedding the fluid particles in a uniform force field. Density, velocity and Temperature profiles across the channel are investigated. When particles will be inserted into the flow, it is expected that the...

Periodic and quasiperiodic motion of an elongated microswimmer in Poiseuille flow.

We study the dynamics of a prolate spheroidal microswimmer in Poiseuille flow for different flow geometries. When moving between two parallel plates or in a cylindrical microchannel, the swimmer performs either periodic swinging or periodic tumbling motion. Although the trajectories of spherical and elongated swimmers are qualitatively similar, the swinging and tumbling frequency strongly depen...

Universal dynamics in the onset of a Hagen-Poiseuille flow.

The dynamics in the onset of a Hagen-Poiseuille flow of an incompressible liquid in a channel of circular cross section is well-studied theoretically. We use an eigenfunction expansion in a Hilbert space formalism to generalize the results to channels of an arbitrary cross section. We find that the steady state is reached after a characteristic time scale tau=(A/P)2(1/nu), where A and P are the...
