High energy feeding in protein-energy malnutrition.

The use of a high-fat diet in malnourished children produced accelerated growth of lean tissues as well as adipose tissue, and resulted in rapid nutirtional rehabilitation in 25 seriously malnourished babies. Such diets are easy to prepare and relatively cheap, and they offer important advantages over conventional feeding in the hospital treatment of malnourished children.

Neurobiology of feeding and energy expenditure.

Significant advancements have been made in the past century regarding the neuronal control of feeding behavior and energy expenditure. The effects and mechanisms of action of various peripheral metabolic signals on the brain have become clearer. Molecular and genetic tools for visualizing and manipulating individual components of brain homeostatic systems in combination with neuroanatomical, el...

Hunger and satiety: one brain for two?

UNDERSTANDING THE PHYSIOLOGICAL controls of eating and developing effective pharmacological tools to reduce eating has never been more important. The modern world faces an unprecedented obesity epidemic, and the current treatment strategies are rather unsuccessful. One possible solution may be a combination or cocktail therapy. Obesity control research has been more focused on “long-term” adipo...

Hunger and Satiety Gauge Reward Sensitivity

Many of the neurocircuits and hormones known to underlie the sensations of hunger and satiety also substantially alter the activity of the dopaminergic reward system. Much interest lies in the ways that hunger, satiety, and reward tie together, as the epidemic of obesity seems tied to the recent development and mass availability of highly palatable foods. In this review, we will first discuss t...

Neural Control of Hunger, Appetite, and Satiety **

Hunger, appetite, and satiety are often regarded as problems in the physiology of digestion. In recent years, however, they have been studied more and more commonly as functions of the brain. This latter point of view, i.e., neurophysiology, is used in the paper which follows, and the regulation of food intake is here described in terms of mechanisms and reactions that characterize the nervous ...
