Hybrid Amyloid‐Based Redox Hydrogel for Bioelectrocatalytic H <sub>2</sub> Oxidation

An artificial amyloid-based redox hydrogel was designed for mediating electron transfer between a [NiFeSe] hydrogenase and an electrode. Starting from mutated prion-forming domain of fungal protein HET-s, hybrid containing single benzyl methyl viologen moiety synthesized. This able to self-assemble into structurally homogenous nanofibrils. Molecular modeling confirmed that the groups are aligned along fibril axis tethered its core by long, flexible polypeptide chain allows close encounters fibril-bound oxidized or reduced groups. Redox films capable immobilizing under mild conditions at surface carbon electrodes were obtained simple pH jump. In this way, bioelectrodes electrocatalytic oxidation H2 fabricated afforded catalytic current densities up 270 μA cm−2, with overpotential 0.33 V, quiescent 45 °C.
