Hydrodynamic Characteristics of an Internal Recycle Berty Catalytic Reactor in Batch/Continuous or Packed/Fluidized Bed Modes

Berty-type internal recycle reactors offer great opportunities for screening catalysts and reproducing catalytic reacting conditions in multiple processes, thus approaching industrial reactions while amplifying kinetic information. However, the rational design of these requires a deeper understanding their governing hydrodynamics equations so that they can be better utilized batch or continuous mode as packed fluidized beds. In this work, by adopting slice model to represent three-dimensional symmetric geometry with porous zone settings catalyst beds, coupled species transport model, reference frame, SST k–? turbulence we developed computational fluid dynamic simulation strategy commercial Berty reactor manufactured Integrated Lab Solutions (ILS). We conducted experiments validate proposed modeling approach under bed operations, through which hydrodynamic behaviors packed/fluidized beds were also investigated studying influences transient injection, porosities, rotation rates. As result, reported set assess velocity contact time different simplified performance improvements replacing need perform complex simulations conduct costly experiments. On grounds various operating conditions, discussed pertinence instruments intrinsic measurements batch/continuous operational modes.
