Hyper-Specific Prefixes: Gotta Enjoy the Little Things in Interdomain Routing

چکیده

Autonomous Systems (ASes) exchange reachability information between each other using BGP -- the de-facto standard inter-AS routing protocol. While IPv4 (IPv6) routes more specific than /24 (/48) are commonly filtered (and hence not propagated), route collectors still observe many of them. In this work, we take a closer look at those "hyper-specific" prefixes (HSPs). particular, analyze their prevalence, use cases, and whether operators them intentionally or accidentally. total number increases over time, most HSPs can only be seen by collector peers. Nonetheless, some constantly throughout an entire year propagate widely. We find that represent (internal) to peering infrastructure related address block relocations blackholing. hundreds add well-known databases, possibly accidentally leaked routes.

Security in Interdomain Routing

Current interdomain routing protocols are limited in implementations of universal security. Because of this, the Internet is vulnerable to many attacks at the AS to AS routing infrastructure. Such attacks can result in Internet outages, manipulation or exposure of Internet traffic, or the loss of control over Internet address space. BGP is the protocol that enables interdomain routing in the In...

Toward Compact Interdomain Routing

Despite prevailing concerns that the current Internet interdomain routing system will not scale to meet the needs of the 21st century global Internet, networking research has not yet led to the construction of a new routing architecture with satisfactory and mathematically provable scalability characteristics. Worse, continuing empirical trends of the existing routing and topology structure of ...

Interdomain Routing with Negotiation

Current interdomain routing policies are largely based on information local to each ISP, in part due to competitive concerns and the lack of effective information sharing mechanisms. This can lead to routes that are sub-optimal and even to routes that oscillate. We explore a setting in which two neighboring ISPs negotiate to determine the path of the traffic they exchange. We first ask the basi...

Securing Interdomain Routing

I argue that (1), the threat to availability, is by far the point of greatest risk given current technology and it is also the only one of the three that requires an infrastructure level solution. The second two can be handled primarily as end-to-end issues. (2) can be solved using end-to-end encryption, which is possible even between two parties with no preexisting shared secrets using Diffie-...
