Impact damage behavior of lightweight CFRP protection suspender on railway vehicles

The lightweight design of railway vehicle components using fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs) has become a research hotspot due to the strong need for energy saving and environmental protection. This paper aims evaluate impact damage behavior carbon (CFRP) protection suspender, which is component on vehicles prevent falling joist bolster from touching rails avoid derailment trains. A finite element (FE) model CFRP considered varying bolt preloads was established in ABAQUS/Explicit. preload successfully applied around installation holes suspender by deliberately reducing local temperature shank create shrinkage. then analyzed, impact-induced governed Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM) models, include both intra-laminar inter-laminar damage. low-velocity response investigated with lay-ups [0]10 [0/90/0/90/0]S under different (i.e. 0, 5 20 kN). results showed that vulnerable positions suspenders included contact edge between impactor, curved corner areas holes. In addition, lay-up had better resistance than [0/90/0/90/0]S. By applying preloads, it increase could help occurrence crack holes, thus improving structural safety when subjected impact. present simulation offered great value optimization survive sudden loads service.
