Impact of Teachers' Language Expression and Message Valence when Conveying Classroom‐Compliance Instructions

This study examines how the types of language expression and message valence used by teachers to convey classroom-compliance instructions affect elementary-school children's psychological reactance their intention follow instructions. Altogether, 178 children (54% girls) participated in a mixed-design experiment. Participants read four self-developed cartoons, where hypothetical teacher conveyed through expressions, responded questions measuring based on cartoons. The results showed that was relatively significant high-controlling condition. In low-controlling condition, approach evoked less enhanced instructions, whereas avoidance did so Our findings offer suggestions can improve classroom management altering messages accordance with motivation characteristics students.
