Impacts of cutting frequency and position to tree line on herbage accumulation in silvopastoral grassland reveal potential for grassland conservation based on land use and cover information

چکیده
In agricultural grassland, high herbage utilisation efficiency (HEFF), which is the proportion of gross live-green production that utilised before entering senescence, ensured by frequent defoliation. The decision upon defoliation frequency to apply depends on farming intensity. Assuming a reduced total accumulation near trees in silvopastoral systems, defoliations with HEFF become less worthwhile—at least specific spatial configurations. This makes an extensive management interesting option because it promotes other grassland-related ecosystem services such as biodiversity. present study first analysed interaction between and position total, dead live at two sites short-rotation coppices Germany. addition, grassland–tree interface Germany was assessed from land use cover maps based satellite data approximate potential grassland extensification trees. declined up 41% but not affected position. Consequently, any intensification paid-off adequate productivity quality terms tree-related losses are expected distance 4.5–6 m. Applying 4.5 m border data, we found 4.4% (approximately 2200 km2) area tree potentially suitable for extensification. These findings indicate substantial biodiversity conservation grasslands low trade-off high-quality yield.

Knowledge of the relationship between stocking rate or grazing intensity and plant production is fundamental to the sustainable management of rangelands. The general management paradigm is that plant production declines as stocking rate increases. Our objective was to determine the impact of stocking rate on herbaceous production of a sand sagebrush (Artemisia filifolia Torr.)grassland. Stockin...
متن کاملImpacts of Tree Rows on Grassland Birds and Potential Nest Predators: A Removal Experiment
Globally, grasslands and the wildlife that inhabit them are widely imperiled. Encroachment by shrubs and trees has widely impacted grasslands in the past 150 years. In North America, most grassland birds avoid nesting near woody vegetation. Because woody vegetation fragments grasslands and potential nest predator diversity and abundance is often greater along wooded edge and grassland transitio...
متن کاملAn Object-Based Approach for Mapping Shrub and Tree Cover on Grassland Habitats by Use of LiDAR and CIR Orthoimages
Due to the abandonment of former agricultural management practices such as mowing and grazing, an increasing amount of grassland is no longer being managed. This has resulted in increasing shrub encroachment, which poses a threat to a number of species. Monitoring is an important means of acquiring information about the condition of the grasslands. Though the use of traditional remote sensing i...
