Maximal halos in high-luminosity spiral galaxies
We test the halo dominated mass model, recently proposed for high-luminosity galaxies, against the rotation velocity data of a large sample of L ∼ L∗ spirals. We find that this model does not reproduce the general kinematic properties required. The alternative disc dominated model, on the contrary, easily fits the data.
متن کاملHigh-resolution Optical Rotation Curves of Low-luminosity Spiral Galaxies
We present optical long-slit spectroscopic observations of 21 low-luminosity, extreme late-type spiral galaxies. Our sample is comprised of Sc–Sm Local Supercluster spirals with moderate-to-low optical surface brightnesses and with luminosities at the low end for spiral disk galaxies (MV 18:8). For each galaxy we have measured high spatial resolution position-velocity (P-V) curves using the H e...
متن کاملThe Space Density of Spiral Galaxies as function of their Luminosity, Surface Brightness and Scalesize
The local space density of galaxies as a function of their basic structural parameters –like luminosity, surface brightness and scalesize– is still poorly known. Our poor knowledge is mainly the result of strong selection biases against low surface brightness and small scalesize galaxies in any optically selected sample. We show that in order to correct for selection biases one has to obtain ac...
متن کاملThe properties and luminosity function of extremely low luminosity galaxies
We examine a sample of low redshift (10 < d < 150 h Mpc) field galaxies including galaxies with luminosities as low as Mr − 5 log10 h ∼ −12.5, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 2 (SDSS). The sample is unique in containing galaxies of extremely low luminosities in a wide range of environments, selected with uniform and well-understood criteria. We present the luminosity fun...
