Influence of Friction Angles on Earth Pressures in Dry Granular Flow Dynamics and Soil Mechanics

چکیده
The earth pressure coefficient (K) determines the nature of (tendency of) deformation granular mass during flow or deposition. When velocity is increasing, K takes its active state Kact and divergent. decreasing, passive Kpas convergent. mathematical relations presented here their 2-D 3-D plots highlight that coefficients strongly depend on internal angle (δ) basal (ϕ) frictions. relation for dry extended to find these in soil mechanics. Results further show drops as friction increases, but rises. earth's at rest if wall natural position

Influence of particle characteristics on granular friction
[1] We report on laboratory experiments designed to illuminate grain-scale deformation mechanisms within fault gouge. We vary particle size distribution, grain and surface roughness, and gouge layer thickness to better understand how grain sliding, rolling, dilation, and compaction affect the strength and stability of granular fault gouge. The experiments employed the double direct shear testin...
متن کاملInfluence of friction on granular segregation.
Vertical shaking of a mixture of small and large beads can lead to segregation where the large beads either accumulate at the top of the sample, the so-called Brazil nut effect (BNE), or at the bottom, the reverse Brazil nut effect (RBNE). Here we demonstrate experimentally a sharp transition from the RBNE to the BNE when the particle coefficient of friction increases due to aging of the partic...
متن کاملDynamics of dry granular avalanches.
A fine analysis of the statistics of dry granular avalanches in a rotating drum setup reveals that, beyond the fluctuations, the angle at which an avalanche ends is correlated experimentally to the angle at which the avalanche starts. This correlation resulting from inertia defines an intermediate "neutral" angle that characterizes the corresponding granular pile. In addition, an intensive stud...
متن کاملModelling granular soil to predict pressures on integral bridge abutments
Presented here is a granular soil model created to investigate the soil pressures which develop behind integral bridge abutments. The problem is introduced along with a brief summary of the fundamental behaviour, the model produced, and the initial validation. The paper looks at the initial outcome of the final validation procedure where experimental behaviour of an abutment is compared to the ...
متن کاملInfluence of machining parameters on surface roughness and dry friction
Article history: Received 6 October, 2015 Accepted 7 March 2016 Available online 8 March 2016 Dry friction depends on the surface topography which, in turn, is governed by machining parameters in addition to several other factors,. Therefore, in order to establish a qualitative relationship among these factors, the surface roughness and coefficient of static friction are measured for specimens ...
