Initial Tropospheric Wind Observations by Sanya Incoherent Scatter Radar

چکیده

Sanya incoherent scatter radar (SYISR) is a newly developed phased array in the low latitudes of China located at (18.3°N, 109.6°E), Hainan Province. The main objective SYISR to observe ionosphere. Given its frequency and power, it should have capability troposphere. In this study, we show several tropospheric wind experiments that may indicate function expansion verification, although observing troposphere will not be an operation mode future. Reliable echoes were detected by up 20 km with turbulence scale 0.35 m 430 MHz. Generally, both geometric (GEO) method velocity azimuth display (VAD) give similar profiles. Above 10 km, discrepancy between two methods becomes nonnegligible. For same method, above 15–20 among winds derived from different zenith angle measurements VAD more reasonable results higher altitudes. standard deviation difference (SYISR minus reanalysis data ERA5) for zonal meridional was 1.1 m/s 0.78 m/s, respectively. During rainfall, can distinguish spectrum rainfall atmospheric power according spectral widths Doppler shifts.

Substorm Triggering by New Plasma Intrusion: Incoherent-Scatter Radar Observations

In the companion paper, we identified a repeatable sequence of events leading to substorm onset in THEMIS all-sky imager observations: enhanced flows bring new plasma into the plasma sheet. The new plasma then moves earthward as a flow channel, bringing it to the near-Earth plasma sheet and where it produces onset instability. New plasma entering the dusk (dawn) convection cell drifts equatorwa...

Incoherent scatter radar observations of AGW/TID events generated by the moving solar terminator

Observations of traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) associated with atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) generated by the moving solar terminator have been made with the Millstone Hill incoherent scatter radar. Three experiments near 1995 fall equinox measured the AGW/TID velocity and direction of motion. Spectral and cross-correlation analysis of the ionospheric density observations indicate...

Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar observations of anomalous electron heating in the E region

A comprehensive 2-year dataset collected with the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar (PFISR) located near Fairbanks, Alaska (MLAT = 65.4 N) is employed to identify and analyse 22 events of anomalous electron heating (AEH) in the auroral E region. The overall AEH occurrence probability is conservatively estimated to be 0.3 % from nearlycontinuous observations of the E region by PFISR, although ...

Ionospheric climatology and variability from long-term and multiple incoherent scatter radar observations: variability

Long-term incoherent scatter radar (ISR) observations are used to study ionospheric variability for two midlatitude sites, Millstone Hill and St. Santin. This work is based on our prior efforts which resulted in an empirical model system, ISR Ionospheric Model (ISRIM), of climatology (and now variability) of the ionosphere. We assume that the variability can be expressed in three terms, the bac...
