چکیده
<p>Internal gravity waves are propagating disturbances in stably stratified fluids, and can transport momentum energy over large spatial extents. From a fundamental viewpoint, internal interesting due to the nature of their dispersion relation, linear dynamics reasonably well-understood. an oceanographic qualitative quantitative understanding significant wave generation ocean is emerging, while dissipation mechanisms being debated. This paper reviews current knowledge on instabilities waves, primarily focusing growth small-amplitude disturbances. Historically, wave-wave interactions based weakly nonlinear expansions have driven progress this field, investigate spontaneous transfer various temporal scales. Recent advances numerical/experimental modeling field observations further revealed noticeable differences between forms terms instability characteristics; turn has motivated theoretical calculations appropriately chosen fields settings. After brief introduction, we present pedagogical discussion different two-dimensional forms. The general ideas concerning triadic resonance then introduced, before proceeding towards characteristics plane beams modes. Results from theoretical, experimental numerical studies summarized provide overall picture gaps our understanding. An perspective given, both relevant outstanding questions additional factors at play. While applications review focused ocean, several atmospheric astrophysical systems too.</p>

Internal Gravity Waves
Ocean waves move due to gravity: the water at crests is heavier than the air surrounding it and so it falls, overshoots its equilibrium position and then at a trough feels an upward restoring force. The same phenomena occurs below the ocean surface. Cold water lifted upward into warmer surroundings will feel a downward buoyancy force and downwarddisplaced warm water will feel an upward buoyancy...
متن کاملOverturned internal capillary-gravity waves
A vortex sheet formulation of irrotational, incompressible Euler flow is used to compute periodic traveling waves at the interface between two constant-density, two-dimensional fluids, including waves with overturned crests. Branches of traveling waves are computed via numerical continuation, which are jointly continuous in the physical parameters: Bond number, Atwood number and mean shear. Glo...
متن کاملNonlinear Dynamics of Hydrostatic Internal Gravity Waves
Stratified hydrostatic fluids have linear internal gravity waves with different phase speeds and vertical profiles. Here a simplified set of partial differential equations (PDE) is derived to represent the nonlinear dynamics of waves with different vertical profiles. The equations are derived by projecting the full nonlinear equations onto the vertical modes of two gravity waves, and the result...
متن کاملFrom Topographic Internal Gravity Waves to Turbulence
Internal gravity waves are a key process linking the large-scale mechanical forcing of the oceans to small-scale turbulence and mixing. In this review, we focus on internal waves generated by barotropic tidal flow over topography. We review progress made in the past decade toward understanding the different processes that can lead to turbulence during the generation, propagation, and reflection...
متن کاملThree-dimensional instabilities of nonlinear gravity-capillary waves
Linear three-dimensional instabilities of nonlinear two-dimensional uniform gravitycapillary waves are studied using numerical methods. The eigenvalue system for the stability problem is generated using a Galerkin method and differs in detail from techniques used to study the stability of pure gravity waves (McLean 1982) and pure capillary waves (Chen & Saffman 1985). It is found that instabili...
