Intensive care nurses’ knowledge and practice of evidence-based recommendations for endotracheal suctioning: a multisite cross-sectional study in Changsha, China

Abstract Background Endotracheal suctioning is one of the most frequently performed invasive procedures by intensive care nurses. Nurses should have adequate knowledge and skills to perform endotracheal based on best evidence. Little known about nurses’ practice evidence-based in Chinese hospitals. The purpose this study was investigate recommendations regarding suctioning. Specifically, aimed examine (1) awareness adherence guidelines (2) factors influencing their level adherence. Methods A cross-sectional survey 310 staff nurses working units carried out at Changsha, China. Data participants’ characteristics, of, were collected through online questionnaires. Following univariate descriptive statistics, Mann–Whitney U test Kruskal–Wallis H using Software Package Statistical Analysis Version 23.0. Results total 281 completed returned (response rate = 90.6 %). One-half three-quarters knew 21 26 practices believed followed guidelines. Almost 50 % some clinical did not follow recommendations, such as routinely normal saline 80–120 mmHg suction pressure during with training demonstrated significantly higher levels than untrained Conclusions findings revealed that lacked several essential practices, there gaps current guideline recommendations. Further research emphasize revealing barriers facilitators implementing well developing context-suitable interventions for implementation.
