The law of the wake in the turbulent boundary layer

After an extensive survey of mean-velocity profile measurements in various two-dimensional incompressible turbulent boundarylayer flows, it is proposed to represent the profile by a linear combination of two universal functions. One is the well-known law of the wall. The other, called the law of the wake, is characterized by the profile at a point of separation or reattachment. These functions ...

Turbulent Boundary-Layer Separation

This article summarizes our present understanding of the physical behavior of two-dimensional turbulent separated flows, which occur due to adverse pressure gradients around streamlined and bluff bodies. The physical behavior of turbulence is flow dependent, so detailed experimental infor mation is needed for understanding such flows and modeling their physics for calculation methods. An earli...

Turbulent boundary layer equations

We study a boundary layer problem for the Navier-Stokes-alpha model obtaining a generalization of the Prandtl equations conjectured to represent the averaged flow in a turbulent boundary layer. We solve the equations for the semi-infinite plate, both theoretically and numerically. The latter solutions agree with some experimental data in the turbulent boundary layer.

Interaction layer between a turbulent boundary layer and free-stream turbulence

The interaction between a turbulent free-stream and a turbulent boundary layer is investigated through particle image velocimetry measurements. An ‘interaction layer’ located between 0.12 ≤ y/δ ≤ 0.19, at the end of the log layer, is identified whereby the kinetic energy in this layer describes the flow above it. Conditional averages about the interaction layer indicate that it is home to peaks...

Boundary Layer Adaptivity for Transonic Turbulent Flows

Simulations of turbulent flows are challenging and require tight and varying mesh spacings near the walls that depend on the turbulence models used. Semi-structured meshes are often used in the turbulent wall boundary layers due to their ability to be strongly graded and anisotropic. To reduce the discretization errors in the solution, an adaptive approach becomes essential due to the lack of g...
