Intra-cortical propagation of EEG alpha oscillations

The most salient feature of spontaneous human brain activity as recorded with electroencephalography (EEG) are rhythmic fluctuations around 10Hz. These alpha oscillations have been reported to propagate over the scalp with velocities in the range of 5-15m/s. Since these velocities are in the range of action potential velocities through cortico-cortical axons, it has been hypothesized that the o...

EEG alpha oscillations: the inhibition-timing hypothesis.

The traditional belief is that the event-related alpha response can solely be described in terms of suppression or event-related desynchronization (ERD). Recent research, however, has shown that under certain conditions alpha responds reliably with an increase in amplitudes (event-related synchronization or ERS). ERS is elicited in situations, where subjects withhold or control the execution of...

Pulsed Out of Awareness: EEG Alpha Oscillations Represent a Pulsed-Inhibition of Ongoing Cortical Processing

Alpha oscillations are ubiquitous in the brain, but their role in cortical processing remains a matter of debate. Recently, evidence has begun to accumulate in support of a role for alpha oscillations in attention selection and control. Here we first review evidence that 8-12 Hz oscillations in the brain have a general inhibitory role in cognitive processing, with an emphasis on their role in v...

Cortical Alpha Oscillations Predict Speech Intelligibility

Understanding speech in noise (SiN) is a complex task involving sensory encoding and cognitive resources including working memory and attention. Previous work has shown that brain oscillations, particularly alpha rhythms (8-12 Hz) play important roles in sensory processes involving working memory and attention. However, no previous study has examined brain oscillations during performance of a c...

Functional aspects of alpha oscillations in the EEG.

Experimental evidence suggests a functional significance of EEG alpha rhythms. Event-related, evoked, and induced alpha rhythms may have functional correlates in primary sensory processing and preparatory processes. These results are in accordance with the view that spontaneous and induced EEG alpha rhythms have quasi-deterministic properties.
