Intrinsically modified self-extinguishing fire-retardant epoxy resin using boron-polyol complex

Abstract A novel fire-retardant epoxy thermoset, containing boron polyol complex, was prepared and characterised. The additive a stoichiometric mixture of boric acid glycerol. Flame retardancy the resin improved by formation stable char layer that protected underlying from further burning. Phonon transport through polymer matrix via hydrogen bonding identified. acted as thermal bridge for intermolecular phonon to gain conductivity resulting early formation. between complex demonstrated using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. high degree graphitization confirmed Raman Thermogravimetric analysis used decomposition confirm yield over 20%. Reaction fire test revealed enhancement in self-extinguishing properties blend compared neat epoxy. Cone calorimetry testing decreased peak heat release rate total smoke production effect compound matrix. Hydrogen bonding, thick at surface, blowing out caused pyrolytic gases escaping gaseous phase, were attributed retardancy. This research may find applications insulation material electronic circuit boards, coating aerospace materials, well building construction industries.
