Inverse Migration of Seismicity Quiescence During the 2019 Ridgecrest Sequence

چکیده
Seismicity quiescences are best observed during sequences with multiple mainshocks and often emerge some delay after an initial phase of aftershock triggering. The mechanisms controlling this poorly understood, due to a lack systematic precise estimation the duration triggering which is made complicated by rapidly changing magnitude completeness mainshock. Here, we analyze how such delayed quiescence developed 2019 Ridgecrest (California) sequence, using refined earthquake data set obtained template matching relative relocation. A method that allows estimating occurrence rate correcting for change in detection (completeness magnitude) applied. We find immediate seismicity shutdown was triggered second (M7.1) mainshock at tips north-east trending cross-cut fault hosted most slip first (M6.4) This progressed toward central part over following days. overall sequence M6.4 M7.1 rupture consistent static Coulomb stress modeling. inverse migration unique observation, explained enhanced spatial variability where intersects main shock, hence strongly damaged zone there. further confirms previous observations structural disorder cross fault, showing has first-order control on dynamics scale

Initial rupture of earthquakes m the 1995 Ridgecrest , California sequence
Close examination of the P waves from earthquakes ranging in size across several orders of magnitude shows that the shape of the initiation of the velocity waveforms is independent of the magnitude of the earthquake. A model in which earthquakes of all sizes have similar rupture initiation can explain the data. This suggests that it is difficult to estimate the eventual size of an earthquake fr...
متن کاملObservation of the seismic nucleation phase in the Ridgecrest, California, earthquake sequence
Near-source observations of five M 3.8-5.2 earthquakes near Ridgecrest, California are consistent with the presence of a seismic nucleation phase. These earthquakes start abruptly, but then slow or stop before rapidly growing again toward their maximum rate of moment release. Deconvolution of instrument and path effects by empirical Green's functions demonstrates that the initial complexity at ...

In this issue of Molecular Cell, De Virgilio and colleagues (Talarek et al., 2010) identify the Igo1/2 proteins as factors that protect mRNAs from degradation during quiescence.

Seismograms from the 1995 to 1996 Ridgecrest, California, earthquake sequence, recorded by the TriNet digital seismic network, provide high-quality waveforms from sites throughout southern California, including sites in markedly heterogeneous areas like the Los Angeles area sedimentary basins. Synthetic seismograms calculated by the refiectivity method with various 1D models are used as a basel...
