چکیده

A total of 350 weanling pigs (200 × 400, DNA; initially, 12.5 ± 0.3 lb BW) were used in a 42-d study with 5 per pen and 14 replicate pens treatment. At weaning, allotted to completely randomized design randomly assigned one five dietary treatments: 1) negative control (standard nursery diet no additives); 2) 3,000 ppm ZnO included phase 1 2,000 2; 3) 0.7% formic acid (Amasil NA, BASF, Florham, NJ); 4) 0.18% glycerol monolaurate (Natural Biologics GML, Natural Biologics, Newfield, NY); 5) 1.0% blend acid, sodium diformate, (FORMI 3G, ADDCON GmbH, Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany). Pigs fed treatment diets from d 0 28 then common 42. This allowed be as part standard 3-phase program. From 7, containing or the had significantly increased (P = 0.03) ADG compared control. Feed intake did not differ > 0.05) during this period. Overall, GML reduced their counterparts control, ZnO, FORMI diets. was also impacted 0.233) by treatments. Fecal DM evaluated 7 there significant day interaction 0.035). lower fecal % on but higher 21. There evidence difference between treatments for 28. In summary, is potential improve growth performance immediately post-weaning without negatively impacting consistency. Further research warranted determine mode action these acids elucidate efficacy alternative feed ingredients combat challenges swine production.

Evaluation of soy protein concentrates in nursery pig diets.

Four experiments were conducted with 730 weanling pigs to determine the effects of soy protein concentrate (SPC) in diets for weanling pigs. Experimental diets were fed from d 0 to 14 postweaning and a common diet was fed from d 15 to 28 for Exp. 1, 2, and 3; experimental diets were fed from d 0 to 7 postweaning in Exp. 4. In Exp. 1, the 4 experimental diets included 1) a 0% soybean meal (SBM) ...

Glycerol Monolaurate Antibacterial Activity in Broth and Biofilm Cultures

BACKGROUND Glycerol monolaurate (GML) is an antimicrobial agent that has potent activity against gram-positive bacteria. This study examines GML antibacterial activity in comparison to lauric acid, in broth cultures compared to biofilm cultures, and against a wide range of gram-positive, gram-negative, and non-gram staining bacteria. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS GML is ≥ 200 times more effe...

Glycerol monolaurate inhibits virulence factor production in Bacillus anthracis.

Anthrax, caused by Bacillus anthracis, has been brought to the public's attention because of the 2001 bioterrorism attacks. However, anthrax is a disease that poses agricultural threats in the United States as well as human populations in Europe, China, Africa, and Australia. Glycerol monolaurate (GML) is a compound that has been shown to inhibit exotoxin production by Staphylococcus aureus and...

Utilization of spray-dried blood cells and crystalline isoleucine in nursery pig diets.

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate spray-dried blood cells (SDBC) and crystalline isoleucine in nursery pigs. In Exp. 1, 120 pigs were used to evaluate 0, 2, 4, and 6% SDBC (as-fed basis) in a sorghum-based diet. There were six replicates of each treatment and five pigs per pen, with treatments imposed at an initial BW of 9.3 kg and continued for 16 d. Increasing SDBC from 0 to 4% had...

Effect of crude glycerol on pellet mill production and nursery pig growth performance.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of diets containing crude glycerol on pellet mill production efficiency and nursery pig growth performance. In a pilot study, increasing crude glycerol (0, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15%) in a corn-soybean meal diet was evaluated for pellet mill production efficiency. All diets were steam conditioned to 65.5 degrees C and pelleted through a pellet ...
