Ion Acceleration Efficiency at the Earth’s Bow Shock: Observations and Simulation Results

Collisionless shocks are some of the most efficient particle accelerators in heliospheric and astrophysical plasmas. Here we study quantify ion acceleration at Earth's bow shock with observations from NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) satellites a global hybrid-Vlasov simulation. From MMS observations, find that quasiparallel more accelerating ions. There, up to 15% available energy goes into ions above 10 times their initial energy. Above shock-normal angle ?50°, essentially no energetic observed downstream shock. We efficiency is significantly lower when has low Mach number (MA < 6) while there little dependence for higher values. also on flanks than subsolar point regardless number. The show connection time an upstream field line leads somewhat efficiency. To complement perform simulation realistic solar-wind parameters shape size shows good quantitative agreement observations.
