چکیده

Abstract. We present results of noon–midnight meridional plane global hybrid-Vlasov simulations the magnetotail ion dynamics under a steady southward interplanetary magnetic field using Vlasiator model. The simulation show reconnection and formation earthward tailward fast plasma outflows. approach allows us to study velocity distribution functions (VDFs) that are self-consistently formed during evolution. examine VDFs collected by virtual detectors placed along equatorial within outflows around quasi-steady X line in at X≈-14RE. The magnetotail reconnection region in a global MHD simulation

This work investigates the nature and the role of magnetic reconnection in a global magnetohydrodynamic simulation of the magnetosphere. We use the Gumics-4 simulation to study reconnection that occurs in the near-Earth region of the current sheet in the magnetotail. We locate the current sheet surface and the magnetic x-line that appears when reconnection starts. We illustrate the difference b...

Ion cyclotron and heavy ion effects on reconnection in a global magnetotail

[1] Finite ion cyclotron effects play a significant role in determining the dynamics of the neutral sheet. The demagnetization of the ions facilitates reconnection and produces an electric field perpendicular to the direction of the tail currents. This in-plane electric field drives field-aligned currents and an out-of-plane (or core) magnetic field in conjunction with the generation of flux ro...

Ion temperature anisotropy across a magnetotail reconnection jet

A significant fraction of the energy released by magnetotail reconnection appears to go into ion heating, but this heating is generally anisotropic. We examine ARTEMIS dual-spacecraft observations of a long-duration magnetotail exhaust generated by antiparallel reconnection in conjunction with particle-in-cell simulations, showing spatial variations in the anisotropy across the outflow far (>10...

Microstructure of Magnetic Reconnection in Earth's Magnetotail

A recent study of magnetic reconnectiori in the earth's magnetotail dentified five events in which a pulse of heated electrons appeared near the end of an interval of fast tailward plasma flow. Further investigation of these events has revealed the following information on their microstructure' (1) Measurements of the electron Velocity distribution show that the temperature rise can be characte...

Three-species collisionless reconnection: effect of O+ on magnetotail reconnection.

The nature of collisionless reconnection in a three-species plasma composed of a heavy species, protons, and electrons is examined. In addition to the usual two length scales present in two-species reconnection, there are two additional larger length scales in the system: one associated with a "heavy whistler" which produces a large scale quadrupolar out-of-plane magnetic field, and one associa...
