Ionospheric Topside Diffusive Flux and the Formation of Summer Nighttime Ionospheric Electron Density Enhancement Over Millstone Hill

چکیده
Ionospheric F-region electron density is anomalously higher in the evening than during daytime on many occasions summer geomagnetic mid-latitude regions. This unexpected ionospheric diurnal variation has been studied for several decades. The underlying processes have suggested to be related meridional winds, topside influx arising from sunset collapse, and other factors. However, substantial controversies remain unresolved. Using a numerical model driven by statistical O+ diffusive flux Millstone Hill incoherent scatter radar data, we provide new insight into competing roles of flux, neutral electric fields forming peak. Simulations indicate that while which turn equatorward before sunset, are essential sustain ionization near dusk, critically important formation timing

متن کاملIonospheric plasma temperatures during 1976 – 2001 over Millstone Hill
Incoherent scatter measurements have been made since the 1960s over Millstone Hill. Zenith antenna data since 1976 and steerable antenna data since 1980 are now available through the WWW-based Madrigal database system. By analyzing this large volume of data in a systematic way, this paper provides an updated climatology of the ionospheric temperature over Millstone Hill, including diurnal varia...
متن کاملVariations of topside ionospheric scale heights over Millstone Hill during the 30-day incoherent scatter radar experiment
A 30-day incoherent scatter radar (ISR) experiment was conducted at Millstone Hill (288.5 E, 42.6 N) from 4 October to 4 November 2002. The altitude profiles of electron density Ne, ion and electron temperature (Ti and Te), and line-of-sight velocity during this experiment were processed to deduce the topside plasma scale height Hp, vertical scale height VSH, Chapman scale height Hm, ion veloci...
متن کاملAnomalous electron density events in the quiet summer ionosphere at solar minimum over Millstone Hill
This study compares the observed behavior of the F region ionosphere over Millstone Hill with calculations from the IZMIRAN model for solar minimum for the geomagnetically quiet period 23±25 June 1986, when anomalously low values of hmF 2 <200 km) were observed. We found that these low values of hmF 2 (seen as a G condition on ionograms) exist in the ionosphere due to a decrease of production r...
متن کاملTopside ionospheric vertical electron density profile reconstruction using GPS and ionosonde data: possibilities for South Africa
Successful empirical modeling of the topside ionosphere relies on the availability of good quality measured data. The Alouette, ISIS and Intercosmos-19 satellite missions provided large amounts of topside sounder data, but with limited coverage of relevant geophysical conditions (e.g., geographic location, diurnal, seasonal and solar activity) by each individual mission. Recently, methods for i...
