Is the equivalence principle useful for understanding general relativity?

چکیده
The Equivalence Principle (EP) is at the heart of General Relativity (GR), tested in many aspects. It often used to discuss qualitatively influence gravity on physical phenomena. But can this be made more precise? We compare clock rates, frequency shifts, light deflection and time delay simple static spacetimes analogous phenomena seen by accelerated observers Minkowski space. In contrast previous studies, we do not assume that gravitational field weak see, as proceed, how constrained EP. Special care taken results are only observer-, but coordinate-dependent. By clarify some issues raised literature show which effects cannot simulated acceleration. paper may also serve a contribution for critical discussions implications

Generalized Equivalence Principle in Extended New General Relativity
In extended new general relativity, which is formulated as a reduction of Poincaré gauge theory of gravity whose gauge group is the covering group of the Poincaré group, we study the problem of whether the total energy-momentum, total angular momentum and total charge are equal to the corresponding quantities of the gravitational source. We examine this for charged axi-symmetric solutions of gr...
متن کاملThe Maximum Tension Principle in General Relativity
I suggest that classical General Relativity in four spacetime dimensions incorporates a Principal of Maximal Tension and give arguments to show that the value of the maximal tension is c 4 4G . The relation of this principle to other, possibly deeper, maximal principles is discussed, in particular the relation to the tension in string theory. In that case it leads to a purely classical relation...
متن کاملGeodesics, the Equivalence Principle and Singularities in Higher-dimensional General Relativity and Braneworlds
The geodesics of a spacetime seldom coincide with those of an embedded submanifold of codimension one. We investigate this issue for higher-dimensional general relativity-like models, firstly in the simpler case without branes to isolate which features are already present, and then in the more complicated case with branes. The framework in which we consider branes is general enough to include a...
متن کاملGeneral Relativity in Space and Sensitive Tests of the Equivalence Principle
An introduction into the fundamental quests addressed in space missions is given. These quests are the exploration of the relativistic gravitational field, the Universality of Free Fall, the Universality of the Gravitational Redshift, Local Lorentz Invariance, the validity of Einstein’s field equations, etc. In each case, the correspoding missions take advantage of the space conditions which ar...
متن کاملIs the Principle of Equivalence a Principle?
The work argues the principle of equivalence to be a theorem and not a principle (in a sense of an axiom). It contains a detailed analysis of the concepts of normal and inertial frame of reference. The equivalence principle is proved to be valid (at every point and along every path) in any gravitational theory based on linear connections. Possible generalizations of the equivalence principle ar...
