Juxtaposing GIS and Archaeologically Mapped Ancient Road Routes

چکیده
Mapping ancient roads is crucial to tell credible geospatial stories about where, how, or why different people might have travelled transported materials within and between places in the distant past. Achieving this process challenging commonly accomplished by means of archaeological GIS methods materials. It not uncommon for experts employing these generate inconsistent delineations same roads, creating confusion how produce knowledge decisions based on multiple perspectives. This yet be adequately addressed problem motivates our desire enrich existing literature nature extents differences. We juxtapose archaeologically generated road maps northern Etruria, a region Italy with well-developed network built Etruscans Romans. reveal map differences through comparison approach that integrates broad set qualitative quantitative measures plus concepts strategies. The are evident route locations, sinuosities, lengths, complexities terrains which routes were as defined subtle variations elevation, slope, ruggedness. They ranged from 11.2–34.4 km length, 0–65.7 m relief, 1.0–13.5% mean grade, 0.07–0.79 detour indices 0.19–3.08 terrain roughness indices, all can considerable depending application. Taken together, proved effective furthering understanding range possible disagreements linear features mapped extensible other application areas. point importance explicitly acknowledging maintaining usable perspectives databases well visualization analysis processes, regardless levels disagreement, especially where ground-truth informed assessments cannot reliably performed.

Decoding Road Networks into Ancient Routes: The Case of the Aztec Empire in Mexico
Historical evidence in some regions of Latin America has suggested that the system of ancient routes between places could have determined the success or collapse of prehistoric societies. The identification of such routes provided essential information to understand initial conditions in the evolution of the actual road infrastructure. Looking into the increasing technology applied to generate ...
متن کاملAncient Irrigation Canals Mapped from Corona Imageries and Their Implications in Juyan Oasis along the Silk Road
Historical records and archaeological discoveries have shown that prosperous agricultural activities developed in the ancient Juyan Oasis of northwestern China, an important oasis that once flourished on the ancient Silk Road. However, how the irrigation canals were distributed in historical time was unknown. Here, we identified and mapped the spatial distribution of ancient abandoned irrigatio...
متن کاملZ Alternative Routes in Road Networks
We use web-based and autonomous navigation systems in everyday life. These systems produce driving directions by computing a shortest path (or an approximation) with respect to a length function based on various measures, such as distance and travel time. However, optimal paths do not necessarily match the personal preferences of individual users. These preferences may be based on better local ...
متن کاملAutomatic Recognition of Road Signs by Hough Transform: Road-GIS
The problem of road sign detection and recognition is very important in many practical problems, above all for road cadastral authorities. In this sense, an automatic application able to identify the kind of a road sign starting from common imageries such as photos could be very helpful. The main difficulty is due to a possible poor graphical definition of the imagery. In this case, a valid sup...
متن کاملMapping transit-based access: integrating GIS, routes and schedules
Accessibility is a concept that is not entirely easy to define. Gould (1969) once stated that it is a 'slippery notion … one of those common terms that everyone uses until faced with the problem of defining and measuring it'. Considerable research over the last 40 years has been devoted to defining and measuring accessibility, ranging from access to jobs within an hour's travel time to the ease...
