Land use, spatial heterogeneity of organic matter, granulometric fractions and metal complexation in reservoir sediments

Abstract Aim This study aimed to evaluate land use, distribution of particle size fractions, organic matter (OM) and perform a metal quantification liable complexation in the Itupararanga Reservoir (São Paulo, Brazil). aquatic ecosystem is used for water supply energy generation constantly subjected anthropogenic impacts that alter its physical chemical characteristics. Methods In single campaign, samples surface sediment (10 cm) were collected from nine sampling stations, triplicate, along reservoir. The collection was carried out with “Lenz” type bottom sampler. physicochemical variables, including metals copper, chromium, manganese, nickel, lead zinc, evaluated by basic descriptive statistics techniques combined geostatistics use remote sensing. Results All reservoir predominantly depth interfered directly OM concentration distribution. Therefore, heterogeneity observed regarding contents, fractions metals, exception three zones proved be distinct each other. classification showed real situation Environmental Protection Area (EPA) results indicate central portion more subject anthropic impacts, while dam region has high levels probably originated activities reservoir’s surroundings. Conclusions soil erosion shows lack efficiency EPA’s management, being needed strategic coordination among municipalities enhance conservation.
