Large-scale spatial distribution of deer browsing damage to young tree plantations

چکیده
The economic loss caused by herbivore browsing in forest plantations is a concerning problem many areas around the world. Information on spatial distribution of damage important for owners when selecting locations new plantations, because planting trees high pressure increases losses. Although it difficult to survey across large areas, sporadic sampling data are often collected foresters, governments, and researchers. Thus, this study, we applied generalized additive model (GAM) analysis reveal large-scale variation deer (Cervus nippon) damage. A map produced GAM that used years after (plantation age) location as independent factors showed few pressure. In addition, increased with increasing plantation age, stands aged 2+ more Areas estimated based generally coincided abundance, some exceptions. reflects relatively well will help avoid locating

Different facets of tree sapling diversity influence browsing intensity by deer dependent on spatial scale
Browsing of tree saplings by deer hampers forest regeneration in mixed forests across Europe and North America. It is well known that tree species are differentially affected by deer browsing, but little is known about how different facets of diversity, such as species richness, identity, and composition, affect browsing intensity at different spatial scales. Using forest inventory data from th...
متن کاملEstablishing Native Forbs to Reduce Black-tailed Deer Browsing Damage to Douglas-fir
Principal methods being used to alleviate browsing damage to Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) seedlings by black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) in the Pacific Northwest are animal repellents applied to foilage and plastic mesh cylinders around individual seedlings. As an alternate method, we demonstrated that prompt establishment of highly palatable native forbs reduced summer...
متن کاملLarge Multi-scale Spatial Modeling Using Tree Shrinkage Priors
We develop a multiscale spatial kernel convolution technique with higher order functions to capture fine scale local features and lower order terms to capture large scale features. To achieve parsimony, the coefficients in the multiscale kernel convolution model is assigned a new class of “tree shrinkage prior” distributions. Tree shrinkage priors exert increasing shrinkage on the coefficients ...
متن کاملA TWO-STAGE METHOD FOR DAMAGE DETECTION OF LARGE-SCALE STRUCTURES
A novel two-stage algorithm for detection of damages in large-scale structures under static loads is presented. The technique utilizes the vector of response change (VRC) and sensitivities of responses with respect to the elemental damage parameters (RSEs). It is shown that VRC approximately lies in the subspace spanned by RSEs corresponding to the damaged elements. The property is leveraged in...
متن کاملMapping local density of young Eucalyptus plantations by individual tree detection in high spatial resolution satellite images
Local tree density may vary in young Eucalyptus plantations under the effects of environmental conditions or inadequate management, and these variations need to be mapped over large areas as they have a significant impact on the final biomass harvested. High spatial resolution optical satellite images have the potential to provide crucial information on tree density at an affordable cost for fo...
