چکیده
Abstract Recent fossil discoveries from New Zealand have revealed a remarkably diverse assemblage of Paleocene stem group penguins. Here, we add to this growing record by describing nine new penguin specimens the late (upper Teurian local stage; 55.5–59.5 Ma) Moeraki Formation South Island, Zealand. The largest specimen is assigned species, Kumimanu fordycei n. sp., which may been ever lived. Allometric regressions based on humerus length and proximal width extant penguins yield mean estimates live body mass in range 148.0 kg (95% CI: 132.5 kg–165.3 kg) 159.7 142.6 kg–178.8 kg), respectively, for . A second Petradyptes stonehousei gen. represented five was slightly larger than emperor Aptenodytes forsteri Two small humeri represent an additional smaller unnamed species. Parsimony Bayesian phylogenetic analyses recover crownward early mainland NZ taxa Waimanu Muriwaimanu , but stemward Chatham Island taxon Kupoupou These differ, however, placement these two relative Sequiwaimanu Crossvallia Kaiika massive size close root tree provide support scenario reached upper limit sphenisciform very their evolutionary history, while still retaining numerous plesiomorphic features flipper. Insight into diversity, body size and morphological evolution from the largest Early Cretaceous enantiornithine bird.
Most of Mesozoic bird diversity comprises species that are part of one of two major lineages, namely Ornithurae, including living birds, and Enantiornithes, a major radiation traditionally referred to as 'opposite birds'. Here we report the largest Early Cretaceous enantiornithine bird from north-east China, which provides evidence that basal members of Enantiornithes share more morphologies wi...
متن کاملFirst fossil gravid turtle provides insight into the evolution of reproductive traits in turtles.
Here we report on the first discovery of shelled eggs inside the body cavity of a fossil turtle and on an isolated egg clutch, both referable to the Cretaceous turtle Adocus. These discoveries provide a unique opportunity to gain insight into the reproductive traits of an extinct turtle and to understand the evolution of such traits among living turtles. The gravid adult and egg clutch indicate...

Many odontocete groups have developed enlarged facial crests, although these crests differ in topography, composition and function. The most elaborate crests occur in the South Asian river dolphin (Platanista gangetica), in which they rise dorsally as delicate, pneumatized wings anterior of the facial bones. Their position wrapping around the melon suggests their involvement in sound propagatio...
متن کاملDirected evolution provides insight into conformational substrate sampling by SrtA
The Sortase family of transpeptidases are found in numerous gram-positive bacteria and involved in divergent physiological processes including anchoring of surface proteins to the cell wall as well as pili assembly. As essential proteins, sortase enzymes have been the focus of considerable interest for the development of novel anti-microbials, however, more recently their function as unique tra...
