Learning Experiences of a Participatory Approach to Educating for Sustainable Development in a South African Higher Education Institution Yielding Social Learning Indicators

A principle of sustainable development is that environmental matters are best handled with the participation all concerned citizens. The UN has identified a gap between innovative teaching and learning methods participatory approach at institutions higher education (IHE) to support interdisciplinary action. This paper shares experiences pre-service teacher students who took part in educating for South African IHE. survey research design was used collect data from large group (n = 376) over one semester. qualitative compulsory module’s tasks as intervention. Narratives were completed groups upon completion module. established when including an (ESD) module IHE social indicators (learning, critical thinking, problem solving dealing conflict) emerged their different perspectives reasoning participate collaboratively work toward resolving issues. significance this have been multidisciplinary developing country using ESD
