Ælfric’s Expressions for Shame and Guilt: A Study in Intra-Writer Conceptual Variation

Abstract This research focuses on the analysis of onomasiological variation in Old English texts written by Ælfric; more specifically, I am interested study different motifs that shape linguistic expressions shame and guilt used this Anglo-Saxon monk across textual genres. Through fine-grained whole set recorded entire corpus Ælfrician texts, a network literal figurative conceptualizations for each emotion is proposed here. Based network, have reconstructed analysed patterns conceptual Ælfric’s order to show existing tension between literal, metonymic metaphoric these two emotions.
