چکیده
Abstract We analyzed growth trajectories recorded in the tree-ring series of Norway spruce Picea abies (L.) H. Karst. and silver fir Abies alba Mill. co-occuring with European beech Fagus sylvatica L. old-growth forests driven by natural stand dynamics. The study sites were localized five stands Western Carpathians (Central Europe). characterized life histories 218 individual trees using 25 metrics which refer to age trees, number release events, reaction releases, radial increment basal area increment. found a large variation dbh-age relationship. most included two or three (in single cases up seven) events. did not find tree as an important factor determining post-release response. maximal was frequently registered at terminal stage life. spruces firs significantly differ. concluded that gap-phase dynamics, history events is primary driver plays secondary role. After reaching overstory, can continue growing without significant symptoms aging until extrinsic forces cause their death. Our results indicate studied ecosystem persistence less shade-tolerant attributable niche differentiation site partitioning mechanism. An alternative hypothesis based on shifts densities, species composition climatic factors more probable.

متن کاملDevelopment in Norway Spruce, Picea abies'
A pulse-treatment of embryos of Picea abies (L.) Karst with cytokinin efficiently and reproducibly induces the coordinate de novo formation of bud primordia from subepidermal cells. The cytokinin treatment also affects the germinative development of the embryo; chloroplast maturation is delayed, and cell elongation is completely suppressed. We have analyzed the protein patterns in developing sp...
متن کاملGap formation and dynamics after long‐term steady state in an old‐growth Picea abies stand in Norway: Above‐ and belowground interactions
Stand dynamics and the gap initiation prior to gap formation are not well-understood because of its long-term nature and the scarcity of late-successional stands. Reconstruction of such disturbance is normally based on historical records and dendroecological methods. We investigated gap initiation and formation at the fine-scale stand level in the old-growth reserve of Karlshaugen in Norway. Gi...
متن کاملMetabolite changes in conifer buds and needles during forced bud break in Norway spruce (Picea abies) and European silver fir (Abies alba)
Environmental changes such as early spring and warm spells induce bud burst and photosynthetic processes in cold-acclimated coniferous trees and consequently, cellular metabolism in overwintering needles and buds. The purpose of the study was to examine metabolism in conifers under forced deacclimation (artificially induced spring) by exposing shoots of Picea abies (boreal species) and Abies al...
متن کاملFungal community dynamics in relation to substrate quality of decaying Norway spruce ( Picea abies [L.] Karst.) logs in boreal forests.
Decaying wood plays an important role in forest biodiversity, nutrient cycling and carbon balance. Community structure of wood-inhabiting fungi changes with mass loss of wood, but the relationship between substrate quality and decomposers is poorly understood. This limits the extent to which these ecosystem services can be effectively managed. We studied the fungal community and physico-chemica...
