Local hydrological conditions and spatial connectivity shape invertebrate communities after rewetting in temporary rivers

چکیده

Abstract Temporary rivers (TRs) dominate global river networks and are increasing in occurrence spatiotemporal extent. However, few studies have investigated the communities that establish after rewetting events (i.e. end of dry phase), when local hydrological conditions can shape through species sorting, spatial connectivity sites also influence colonisation. Here, we analysed relative importance both on invertebrate seven not impacted Mediterranean TRs rewetting. We quantified frequency duration drying time since flow resumed. based each site’s position network connectivity) presence nearby disconnected streams. Overall, found played a significant role structuring aquatic Taxonomic richness, functional richness redundancy decreased with increased most recent Network showed unimodal relationship taxonomic metrics. In contrast, streams was negatively related to dispersion. Given intermittence areas is expected intensify under future change scenarios, our results be helpful guide conservation management actions.

Influence of Wood on Invertebrate Communities in Streams and Rivers

—Wood plays a major role in creating multiple invertebrate habitats in small streams and large rivers. In small streams, wood debris dams are instrumental in creating a step and pool profile of habitats, enhancing habitat heterogeneity, retaining organic matter, and changing current velocity. Beavers can convert sections of free-flowing streams into ponds and wetlands by killing trees and build...

Quantitative measures for the local similarity of hydrological spatial patterns

The task of assessing similarity between data sets is common in hydrological modelling. While this has been widely researched for temporal data sets, the similarity between spatial patterns has been largely ignored. This has been due to a lack of spatial pattern data. Today there is widespread use of distributed hydrological models and increasing availability of observed spatial patterns. These...

Spatial and taxonomic correlates of species and species trait 1 assemblages in soil invertebrate communities

1 Whether dispersal limitation and phylogenetic conservatism influence soil species 2 assemblages is still a debated question. We hypothesized that spatial and phylogenetic 3 patterns influence communities in a hump-backed fashion, maximizing their impact at 4 intermediate spatial and phylogenetic distances. Species-environment relationships are blurred 5 by dispersal limitation and restricted ...
