Lost but Not Forgotten: Identifying Unmapped and Unlisted Environmental Hazards including Abandoned Mines

Environmental databases play an essential role in the management of land and communities, including mapping monitoring environmental hazards over time (i.e., abandoned mines). Over last century, mines have closed for many reasons, but there has been no comprehensive database locations mine sites kept regions world. As such, lost from public knowledge, with way managers to assess risks water contamination, as well subsidence. To address this knowledge gap, we present integrated framework identifying using a combination satellite imagery, historical records, geographic evidence, local knowledge. We tested within Newcastle, Illawarra, Lithgow NSW, Australia. identified 61 coal which are currently unaccounted registries, 56% all Newcastle region being unmarked (N = 32), 36% Illawarra 22), 20% 7).
