Low-Temperature Micro-Fracture Toughness Testing of Grain Boundaries in Steel

نویسندگان

چکیده

Temper embrittlement in high-strength steel occurs due to the segregation of impurity elements along prior austenite (γ) grain boundaries, resulting a decrease intergranular strength. However, boundary properties have not yet been experimentally investigated. In this study, we developed micro testing method selectively process micro-cantilever specimens based on specific γ-grain measure fracture toughness. Fracture toughness tests using with side grooves and notch were carried out at 183 K brittle behavior was successfully obtained. The surface showed almost flat crack propagation boundary. derived value, KQ, is lower than that from previous values. By employing for evaluation fractures steel, believe can evaluate more intrinsic compared conventional methods.

Shape effect of ultrafine-grained structure on static fracture toughness in low-alloy steel.

A 0.4C-2Si-1Cr-1Mo steel with an ultrafine elongated grain (UFEG) structure and an ultrafine equiaxed grain (UFG) structure was fabricated by multipass caliber rolling at 773 K and subsequent annealing at 973 K. A static three-point bending test was conducted at ambient temperature and at 77 K. The strength-toughness balance of the developed steels was markedly better than that of conventionall...

Low-energy, Mobile Grain Boundaries in Magnesium

The strong basal texture that is commonly developed during the rolling of magnesium alloy and can even increase during annealing motivates atomic-level study of dislocation structures of both <0001> tilt and twist grain boundaries (GBs) in Magnesium. Both symmetrical tilt and twist GBs over the entire range of rotation angles θ between 0° and 60° are found to have an ordered atomic structure an...

Comment on ”Effect of carbide distribution on the fracture toughness in the transition temperature region of an SA 508 steel”

Critical cleavage stress values and carbide sizes obtained in a recent work by Lee et al. [1] are recalculated using 2D and 3D FE simulations and new constitutive law, instead of small scale yielding assumption and likely improper choice for the behavior of SA 508 steel. A new model based on the weakest link concept with the determined carbide size distribution (CSD) is succesfully applied to p...

Reduced Fracture Toughness of Metallic Glass at Cryogenic Temperature

The effects of cryogenic temperature on the toughness of a Zr-based metallic glass are investigated. Based on three-dimensional fracture morphologies at different temperatures, the crack formation and propagation are analyzed. Through the calculation of the shear transformation zone volume, the shear modulus and bulk modulus of the metallic glass at different temperatures and the crack formatio...

Fracture Toughness of Advanced Ceramics at Room Temperature

This report presents the results obtained by the five U.S. participating laboratories in the Versailles Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS) round-robin for fracture toughness of advanced ceramics. Three test methods were used: indentation fracture, indentation strength, and single-edge pre-cracked beam. Two materials were tested: a gas-pressure sintered silicon nitride and a zirconia tough...
