Macrosomia and large for gestational age in Asia: One size does not fit all

Macrosomia, usually defined as infant birth weight of ?4000 g, does not consider gestational age, sex, or country/region-specific differences in mean and maternal body weight. This issue is particularly relevant for Asia, where 60% the world's population lives, due to variations size weights across populations. Large age (LGA), > 90th centile, a more sensitive measure it considers though dependent on choice growth charts. We aimed review reporting macrosomia LGA Asia. reviewed literature prevalence risk Asia over last 29 years. Prevalence ranged from 0.5% (India) 13.9% (China) while 4.3% (Korea) 22.1% (China), indicating substantial variation within between Asian countries. High pre-pregnancy mass index, excessive gain, impaired glucose tolerance conferred macrosomia/LGA. Incidence varies substantially countries, do charts definitions. The latter makes impossible make comparisons but suggests intrauterine Reporting LGA, using standardized country/regional charts, would better capture incidence high allow comparison identification contributing factors. Better understanding local drivers could enable development improved strategies prevention management LGA.
