Magnetic fields in elliptical galaxies: using the Laing–Garrington effect in radio galaxies and polarized emission from background radio sources

چکیده

ABSTRACT Magnetic fields in elliptical galaxies are poorly constrained because of a lack significant synchrotron emission from them. In this paper, we explore the properties magnetic ellipticals using two methods. First, exploit Laing–Garrington effect (asymmetry observed polarization fraction between radio galaxy jets) for 57 with redshifts up to 0.5. We use differences and rotation measure jet counterjet estimate small- large-scale around (including their circumgalactic medium). find that small-scale field (at scales smaller than driving scale turbulence, approximately 300 pc) lies range 0.1–2.75 $\mu{\rm G}$. The 100 kpc) is an order magnitude field. second method, cross-match Faraday measures (RMs) few hundred (out 3098) extragalactic sources catalogues number morphology intervening on RM distribution. both Gaussian non-Gaussian functions describe distribution derive its statistical properties. Finally, difference spirals ellipticals, at centre be ∼6 Both methods different observations analysis techniques give strengths consistent previous studies (≤10 G}$). results can used constrain dynamo theories evolution simulations.

Radio Mode Outbursts in Giant Elliptical Galaxies

Outbursts from active galactic nuclei (AGN) affect the hot atmospheres of isolated giant elliptical galaxies (gE’s), as well as those in groups and clusters of galaxies. Chandra observations of a sample of nearby gE’s show that the average power of AGN outbursts is sufficient to stop their hot atmospheres from cooling and forming stars, consistent with radio mode feedback models. The outbursts ...

Magnetic fields in nearby galaxies: prospects with future radio telescopes

The origin of magnetic fields in the Universe is an open problem in astrophysics and fundamental physics. Our present-day knowledge is limited to regions of strong magnetic fields and to starforming disks of galaxies. Cosmic-ray electrons emitting at high (GHz) radio frequencies can propagate only a few kpc from their places of origin due to their lifetime limited by energy losses. Low-energy e...

Nuclear radio emission in megaparsec-size radio galaxies

We present high resolution radio observations of the nuclear radio emission in a sample of eight radio galaxies having Megaparsec sizes, using the European VLBI network at 18 cm. At a resolution of 25 mas we detect all the giant radio galaxies from our sample. Among themDA 240 and 1331−099 were imaged for an extended period. These observations reveal a twin-jet structure for DA 240 and one-side...

Radio-Continuum Emission in Polar-Ring Galaxies

We have used the Very Large Array aperture synthesis telescope to conduct a radio continuum survey of polar-ring galaxies, at 20 cm and 6 cm. Forty objects were observed at 20 cm with ≃ 5 resolution. Twenty (50%) of the program sources were detected at 20 cm, down to our 5-σ limit of 0.5 mJy beam−1. This detection rate is similar to those in surveys with comparable sensitivity for early-type ga...

Radio Emission from Galaxies In The Hubble Deep Field

We report on sensitive radio observations made with the VLA at 8.5 GHz, centered on the Hubble Deep Field (HDF). We collected data in the A, CnB, C, DnC, and D configurations, corresponding to angular resolutions ranging from 0.3 to 10. We detected 29 radio sources in a complete sample within 4.6 of the HDF center and above a flux density limit of 9.0 μJy (5 σ). Seven of these sources are locat...
