Magnetic interference mapping of four types of unmanned aircraft systems intended for aeromagnetic surveying

Abstract. Magnetic interference source identification is a critical preparation step for magnetometer-mounted unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) used high-sensitivity geomagnetic surveying. A magnetic field scanner was built mapping the low-frequency that produced by UAS. It to compare four types of electric-powered UAS capable carrying an alkali-vapour magnetometer: (1) single-motor fixed-wing, (2) single-rotor helicopter, (3) quad-rotor and (4) hexa-rotor helicopter. The scanner's error estimated calculating root-mean-square deviation background total intensity over duration; averaged values ranged between 3.1 7.4 nT. Each performed above with motor(s) engaged facing in two orthogonal directions; peak intensities 21.4 574.2 For each system, combination both ferromagnetic electrical current sources.
